Peer Counseling Services provides emotional and educational support to persons with disabilities by staff who can relate to having a disability. Counselors assess the member’s current situation, level of independence, and the impact the disability has on their self-esteem and their relationships with friends and family. Ongoing sessions explore the member’s feelings, attitudes and values affect the member’s goal towards independence.

Join a wellness group for individuals with disabilities

The Empowerment Alliance program provides support for people with mental health disabilities on how to achieve their wellness goals and live better in recovery. Members learn about arts and crafts, creative writing and poetry, computer skills, internet job searches, yoga, budgeting, and how to navigate government benefits.

Get assistive technology for individuals with disabilities

Assistive technology services are adaptive, assistive or rehabilitation products or devices to assist individuals with communication, mobility, learning, recreation; overcome or deal with physical or mental challenges; and help with daily life activities. Items include furniture with lifts, clothing with Velcro or snaps, scooters/walkers, grab bars, hearing devices and amplifiers, seat lifts and motion sensors.

Get free care management support for adults

The Linkages program provides support in daily and crucial living activities for those who have mental health issues that prevent them from living independently. Care management, assessments, advocacy and referral to other services are provided.

Get free durable medical equipment

Convalescent Aid Society (CAS) loans donated medical equipment to residents of San Gabriel Valley for as long as they need it. CAS recycles donated medical equipment by repairing and sanitizing gently used items.

Get educational therapy for children with learning disabilities

Exceptional Children’s Foundation offers educational therapy services for children with learning disabilities such as dyslexia, non-verbal learning disorders, Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD), language processing, anxiety disorders, and reading and writing challenges.

Participate in an independent living program for adults with disabilities

Exceptional Children’s Foundation organizes an independent living program for adults with disabilities. Participants live and learn in apartments as they develop a wide range of life skills. Staff support residents with money management, housekeeping, meal planning and preparation, personal care, emergency response, and community involvement. As residents gain experience and confidence in their independent living skills, staff support them in using these skills to transition to a home of their own with less direct support.

Take a gymnastics class for people with disabilities

Gymnastics sessions include climbing, tumbling, trampoline, balance beam, bars, vault and strength and conditioning. These activities helps build muscle strength, flexibility, balance, coordination, and posture, which can increase spatial awareness, body management, and self-confidence. Each gymnast is assessed and provided individual goals to achieve. Sessions are available for all ages and abilities either 1:1 or small groups.

Join an art studio for people with disabilities

Inside Out Productions teaches visual arts such as drawing, painting, ceramics, sewing, quilting, weaving, embroidery, photography, woodblock prints, and multimedia to individual with disabilities.

Join health and fitness classes for individuals with disabilities

L.A. GOAL offers Tai Chi, Yoga, dance, Zumba (dance exercise), “Healthy Lunch & Movie” days, health education workshops, and classes in personal safety, personal grooming, safe food handling, cooking, laundry skills, etiquette, and house cleaning. Health and fitness classes are offered both during the week and on the weekend.

Abode Communities manages affordable housing throughout Southern California. Housing is provided for individuals, families, youth, veterans, seniors, individuals experiencing homelessness, individuals with disabilities, and survivors of domestic violence.

Get life skills and job training for individuals with developmental disabilities

Institute for the Redesign of Learning Transition & Adult Services (TAS) offers life skills and job training to youth and adults with developmental disabilities, emotional health or mental health issues, and/or dual diagnoses. Services include training in social skills, independent living, and job placement opportunities.

Get life coaching for individuals with disabilities

KnowBarriers offers goal setting, support, accountability, problem solving, and resources so that clients stay motivated and moving forward toward short term and long term goals. Clients commit to three 45-minute coaching sessions per month for 6 months.

Get help with veterans benefits issues

Veterans Legal Institute helps veterans, active duty service members, and reservists who have disabilities, medical conditions, or injuries incurred or made worse during military service by determining and applying for the benefits they are entitled to.

Get assistive technology servies

SCRS offered assistive technology services. This includes the donation of durable medical equipment and devices to the disability community in need, a Lending Library program and home modifications to those eligible, residing in the cities of Whittier and South Gate.
